Precision Boxing and MMA fighter Garret Volpe earned a hard fought victory on Saturday, but it wasn’t long ago that he was in a hospital bed, not fighting for fame, but his survival. Garret fell victim to a heart complications that occured after being infected with an otherwise harmless virus. The situation became so dire that he was one step away from being on a donor list. See the video below to learn more about Volpe’s journey and recovery.

While this news would terrify most people, Garret faced his illness with steadfast determination and optimism, confident that he would not only survive, but thrive.

Once he was back on his feet he did not waste any time and refocused himself on his martial arts goals. First he stepped into the ring for his first boxing match, a grappling superfight followed, then a muay thai bout. All matches had one constant, a notch in the win column for Volpe.

MMA competition remained Volpe’s ultimate goal though. At Cage Wars he would have his opportunity. Standing in his way was a fierce competitor from Team Renzo Gracie, a camp that has numerous past and current world champions to their credit. Volpe knew a hard battle was ahead of him, but he welcomed the challenge with open arms.

The first round began and Volpe began putting his trademark combinations together. Using his whole body as a weapon and his opponent’s whole body as a target Volpe unleashed lightning quick punches, knees and kicks to the head, legs and body.

In the second round Volpe showed his grappling and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu skills taking the fight to the ground and progressing to a near fight ending choke hold. Saved by the bell his opponent came out in the final round determined to win and late in the bout landed several hard punches opening a cut around Volpe’s eye. Volpe wethered the storm though and showed that his heart and determination matched his technique en route to a decision victory.

Martial arts acts as a weapon to tackle our fears in controlled environments and serves as an effective method to gain confidence and comfort in any event. Training martial arts allows a practitioner to experience and combat the fear, anxiety and nerves that cripple the average person. Although this skill is essential for all individuals, the group that can undoubtedly benefit the most are children.

Last week at Precision Boxing and MMA, it was Jada’s first day training in the kid’s BJJ program. It was her first time learning a discipline in Mixed Martial Arts, so naturally she was experiencing some anxiety. Jada had some concerns regarding getting comfortable in the lesson and had some of the other concerns that are typically experienced when participating in a new activity. Being made to feel comfortable in uncomfortable situations is top priority at Precision Boxing & MMA to ensure all of our student’s experiences are great and memorable.

Jada was visibly upset when she came up to front desk to grab her attendance card, there she was approached by the supporting staff of Precision who immediately began trying to calm her with words of comfort. “We promise you’ll love it”, they encouraged. Jada was still feeling uneasy about starting her first class before she changed into her Gi. Coach Brian McLaughlin gently put the rest of her concerns to ease by sharing his story of experiencing anxiety before attending his first Brazilian Ju-Jitsu class. Jada’s mood began to lighten up as Coach Brian shared his experience and explained that he would ease into her training by allowing her to help co-teach the other students that day.

Brain introduced her to the other students in the class and explained that she would be assisting him teach. During the class, Brian paid particularly close attention to her throughout the lesson to ensure that she was comfortable and properly engaged. By the end of the class, Jada had participated, despite expressing that she was too nervous to join in the class, and enjoyed herself a great deal. Jada wasn’t the same intimated girl who was too afraid to step onto the mat to start her training anymore. Instead, she was now smiling and ready to take on any challenge or new experience that was thrown her way! Jada was confident and happy with the end result of the class.  When questioned if she was excited to attend the next program, her response was “yes!”.

Jada’s story isn’t uncommon. Many students are nervous about attending their first mixed martial arts class and share some of the same concerns. The age group that mostly suffers from a series of doubts in confidence or new experiences are children. Mixed Martial Arts at Precision Boxing and MMA offers the recipe to overcome these concerns with consistent training.

Unfortunately, these anxieties act as hindrances for individuals, of all age groups, and prevents them from fulfilling their dreams of taking up MMA. If you live in the Hudson Valley and have a child that’s interested in learning Mixed Martial Arts, but has some anxiety about getting started, visit Precision Boxing and MMA in Poughkeepsie, NY or call 845-392-8495 so we can help them feel comfortable and start training today!

Poughkeepsie Boxing

Poughkeepsie Boxing

Most Poughkeepsie boxers are aware that the sweet science is not a new pass time. With it’s 18th century arrival in Europe and  it’s various incarnations under Broughton Rules, London Prize Ring Rules, and finally the current Marquess of Queensberry Rules, boxing has been practiced for sport, fitness and self defense. What is fairly new, however, is it’s rapid growth in the Hudson Valley area of Poughkeepsie New York and it’s incorporation into the syllabus of Precision MMA in Poughkeepsie. Precision’s boxing program boasts instructors and training partners with extensive resumes in the sport.

Our head boxing instructor, Derrick Ohlhoff, is a 3 times Golden Gloves boxing champion with an extensive winning record in amateur boxing competition who also has many years experience in coaching.  He is arguably the most knowledgeable Poughkeepsie boxing trainer in the entire Hudson Valley.  As such, his attention to detail is excellent, and anyone who takes his classes, from beginners to advanced students, will have much to learn from him. Likewise, our instructor Jon Russo has had several wins inside the boxing ring and has over twenty years of experience in the sport. Having trained in a wide variety of Martial Arts in addition to his boxing training, Jon’s approach to boxing is slightly different and is excellent not only for the ring, but also for street self defense. Jon is also a creative Poughkeepsie boxing instructor who is good at providing an atmosphere that is fun for students of all ages and he is excellent at coming up with entertaining new training exercises. John Joy is another Precision MMA boxing coach who has an impressive amateur record and has held the local AKBF Boxing title at 160lbs. Joy is also adept at teaching Poughkeepsie boxing students of all experience levels, but has a particular knack for explaining the fundamentals to beginners. There is no point in one’s boxing training where emphasis upon proper footwork, head movement and body mechanics is more important than during the beginning stages, and John instills this in everyone from day one.

We are also extremely privileged to have training with us the premier professional Heavyweight boxer in the Hudson Valley in Zuri Lawrence. Zuri was at one point ranked as high as #12 in the world at Heavyweight and was so known for his skills that he was personally sought after and used as a training partner by none other than former World Heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield. Soft spoken and affable, Zuri is excellent at explaining boxing’s finer points to beginners, intermediate, and advanced students.

“Precision MMA is a great place with great teachers. If you want to box come to Precision, it’s a nice spot in a good area with good coaches” – Zuri Lawrence

With such a wealth of experience in our instructors, our training environment reflects. We have a unique atmosphere at Precision which attracts all sorts of people since we are not a traditional boxing gym, we are a Mixed Martial Arts studio which offers a wealth of boxing classes and we reap the benefits of this setting. Those who come to our other classes without much interest in boxing may acquire a taste for it at a later point, especially when they see our brand new eighteen by eighteen foot ring. It might seem odd to those in the Poughkeepsie boxing world, but there are quite a few Mixed Martial Arts studios which offer boxing classes as an aside, but do not have an actual boxing ring in their facility. This works to their detriment if students are interested in stepping in the ring. However, at Precision those interested in competitive boxing can train in the proper environment. Students at Precision in MMA in Poughkeepsie New York often have different motivations for training. Some are simply there to enjoy themselves, which is easy to do since our instructors are easy going and open-minded. Generally, if one were to walk into the average Poughkeepsie boxing gym for no reason other than to find a new pass time a serious boxing coach might not give them as much attention as those preparing for in the ring combat. However, at Precision our instructors will take just as much time to teach boxing’s nuances to those there to have a good time as to the serious competitors. Some students are there for fitness, and with our program’s extensive focus on cardio and strength training this need is sure to be met. And finally, if one is interested in stepping into the ring then Precision’s program will prepare them better than any other in the Poughkeepsie or Hudson Valley region. We have had countless students use the boxing they learned at Precision to win amateur and Golden Gloves matches and we have also had students adapt those skills to win kickboxing, muay thai, amateur and professional Mixed Martial Arts fights.

Poughkeepsie Boxing
Above all else, safety is stressed in Precision’s boxing program and this is why it is so effective for students of all experience levels. Precision has the best safety record of any Poughkeepsie boxing gym in the Hudson Valley. Sparring is only allowed once a student has been attending classes and focusing on the basics for a significant period of time and before they take part our instructors make sure that they are capable of controlling their punching power so they do not present a risk to others. Once a student is permitted to spar, they must wear the proper safety gear at all times, including hand wraps, gloves, headgear, cup and mouthpiece. During sparring sessions the instructor’s watchful eye is on the students at all times to make sure that the proper rules are being obeyed and the proper precautions taken. The instructors place great emphasis on matching together partners of equal skill level. Beginners will not be placed with advanced students in heavy sparring scenarios. Nor will two beginners be paired off if it appears to the staff that their sessions may escalate into brawling. Great thought and care is put into matching up appropriate sparring partners to ensure the best possible results and to reduce any risks for injury.

To conclude, Precision MMA’s Poughkeepsie boxing program leaves no student behind. The privilege of learning to box in a true Mixed Martial Arts school rather than a one dimensional boxing club gives our school a different angle from most, and we have seen the success for ourselves in the enjoyment of our students, as well as in the titles and trophies they have won through their hard work. Whether you are just starting out or have been boxing for years, whether your goal is fitness, self-defense or competition, Precision’s boxing program will adapt to meet your needs as an individual.

At Precision MMA kids training is never stale or boring.  Our kids learn the most cutting edge techniques in the sport of mixed martial arts on a regular basis.  In this video, Precision MMA student 10 year old Richard works with Poughkeepsie’s AKBF Muay Thai champion Karl Nemeth.

Richard is working on muay thai front and round kicks as well as a fake kick into a flying, or “Superman” punch.  This is the same technique utilized by George St. Pierre in his UFC title fights.  Precision MMA is the only Poughkeepsie kids martial arts school that teaches these sophisticated techniques.

Hudson Valley Kids Martial Arts

Hudson Valley Kids Martial Arts

Hudson Valley Kids Martial Arts

Martial Arts can do wonders for your child’s self esteem, confidence and physical and mental health. However, there are so many martial arts schools in the Hudson Valley and each claims to be the best, what should a parent look for?

Here are a few tips to make sure you’re choosing the best martial arts school in the Poughkeepsie area

#1 – Accomplished and Reputable Instructors

If someone in the Hudson Valley is claiming to teach your child how to defend themselves, make sure they can prove they know what they are doing.  Have they ever stepped into the ring and put their skills on display?  Have their students used their techniques successfully against other trained martial artists?  Or is the instructor inexperienced and just looking to turn a profit by taking advantage of uniformed consumers?  Do your research, watch competition footage and ask around.

#2 Testimonials

Sometimes the best fighter is not the best coach. Look for testimonials from parents and students in the Hudson Valley who have been with the school for am extended period of time. If the students have nothing good to say they its is a big red flag.  Look for personal endorsements from Poughkeepsie parents such as this:

#3 Quality Facility

A top of the line Hudson Valley Martial Arts facility shows that the instructor is investing in their students. A dedicated school will make sure their students are receiving their money’s worth – beware of cheap “hole in the wall” facilities. Often times these are fly by night gyms that close quickly after getting their member’s hard earned money.  Make sure that the school has been around for a number of years and is here to stay.

#4  Guarantee

A real business stands behind their product or service.  Only invest your money in a Hudson Valley Kids Martial Arts School that offers a Money Back Guarantee.

So where in the Poughkeepsie / Hudson Valley area can you find a school that stands up to this criteria?

Precision MMA in LaGrange, NY has the areas most accomplished fighters and trainers and the largest martial arts facility in the Hudson Valley.  Precision MMA is also the only Kids Martial Arts School that offers a 30 Day Money Back Guarantee as well as a 30 Day FREE Trial and most importantly all our students love it!

Poughkeepsie jiu-jitsu

Precision MMA‘s Poughkeepsie jiu-jitsu team recently competed at the New York State Grappling Championship in Albany, NY.  Precision MMA has long been known as one of the best Poughkeepsie jiu-jitsu teams on the local circuit, but this was a big step up in competition.  Competitors traveled close to 100 miles and did not plan on going home empty handed – and they certainly didn’t.

With multiple first place finishes the team scored highlight worthy submissions as well as high flying takedowns and throws.  Precision’s Poughkeepsie jiu-jitsu team included teenagers, college students and adults in their 30’s and 40’s all competing side by side.

Their efforts did not go unnoticed, once all the scores were tallied Precision MMA took 3rd in the state wide tournament.  The tournament was organized by NAGA – the North American Grappling Association, the largest grappling circuit in the world today.  This was their largest and most prestigious tournament in the state of New York.

Precision MMA was the only Poughkeepsie jiu-jitsu to rank in the top 10.  This performance is a reflection of the elite black belt instruction which Poughkeepsie jiu-jitsu students receive on a daily basis at Precision MMA.

Hudson Valley residents now have dedicated Poughkeepsie Boxing training center at Precision MMA

Poughkeepsie Boxing

Poughkeepsie Boxing

Precision’s Poughkeepsie Boxing program is open to people of all ages and experience levels, from first day beginners to elite professional boxers and mixed martial artists.  For years, Hudson Valley residents had to choose from two extremes in the Poughkeepsie Boxing world.  The first were ‘boxercising gyms’.  These were health clubs that had nice facilities and amenities, but minimally trained instructors with very unrealistic training.  If you were serious about learning the sweet science and taking your training into the ring, you were out of luck.  The second option for those seeking Poughkeepsie Boxing were the hardcore ‘dungeon gyms”.  Although these gyms often had legitimate fighters on staff, the facilities were often in ruins and the gyms were located in dangerous neighborhoods.  Often times new boxers would be ignored or used as punching bags for the more seasoned boxers.

Precision’s Poughkeepsie Boxing program is different.  Our staff is made up of real boxers including 3 time NY state Golden Gloves Champion Derek Ohlhoff and AKBF Boxing Champion John Joy.  Our training program is reaslistic and battle tested.  However, we also have a specially crafted fundamentals program specifically designed for the brand new Poughkeepsie Boxing student.  You won’t get beat up and no one is ever forced to spar.

So whether you’re looking to get in great shape and experience the thrill of learning boxing or if you’d like to have your name up in lights and step into the ring Precision MMA’s Poughkeepsie Boxing program can get you to your goals.  Give us a call at 845-392-8495 or visit http://www.poughkeepsieboxing.com and get started on your FREE 30 Day trial.

Precision MMA Coach Helps the UFC’s Dan Miller win Submission of the Night

Every fighter dreams of stepping into the UFC octagon and every UFC fighter hopes to take home a big time bonus for a spectacular finish.  Precision MMA coach Brian McLaughlin got to be part of just such an occurrence when he journeyed from Poughkeepsie, NY to Atlantic City to corner Dan Miller at the UFC on FX. Miller enlisted the help of the Hudson Valley coach as he prepared to face BJJ black Belt Ricardo Funch.  For previous fights Brian had helped Dan’s younger brother Jim Miller prepare for battle inside the octagon, but this would be his first time in Dan’s corner.

From day 1 the focus of the training camp was getting the submission.  After reviewing tape on Funch, Brian saw a few weaknesses Dan could exploit.  The biggest being an opening for a guillotine choke.  For weeks Dan drilled the entries knowing that it would be his key to victory.

After 2 hard fought rounds the opportunity presented itself and Dan latched onto the choke at 3:12 of the final round and forced the submission.  In his post fight speech he said, “My coach Brian said the guillotine was there and I took it”.

The incredible submission did not go unnoticed by the UFC brass.  Dan was awarded $50,000 for Submission of the Night, making the victory all the more sweet.
