Precision Fighter Garret Volpe made it to the front cover of the Poughkeepsie Journal this Friday. If you met Garret Volpe today, you would have no idea that two years ago he was forced to face his own mortality. As  a committed athlete who trains tirelessly and is constantly seeking new information on nutrition and fitness, it was a complete shock for him to find out that he was facing heart failure. After Volpe was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, and beneath his muscular frame his heart was functioning at approximately 40% of normal rate. Those who know Garrett would attest that he is not only in good shape, but a living embodiment of peak physical fitness. His family, friends, coaches and teammates were in dismay and disbelief, but none more than Garrett himself. He has dedicated years of his life to training martial arts, in hopes of pursuing his long-time dream of fighting in a mixed martial arts bout. This dream is what kept him in positive spirits, despite being told that he may need a heart transplant if he was going to survive. Check out his article in the Poughkeepsie Journal to learn more about Garrets struggle to make it from heart failure to getting his hand raised. It’s been an exciting couple of weeks here at Precision Boxing and MMA! Last week, Precision fighter Lindsey VanZandt was featured in the Poughkeepsie Journal. The Journal articulated Lindsey’s pain in dealing with her family’s struggle to understand her career path and outlined everything that she’s sacrificed to make it to where she is today. Now 4-1 as a professional, fighting for top organizations such as King of the Cage and Invicta FC, she’s eagerly looking forward to her next fight.

In addition to Lindsey making it into the Poughkeepsie Journal, a couple of our fighters stepped up to compete for the first time. On Saturday, Precision boxer Marcus Grey had his boxing debut; fighting at 205 pounds for the American Kickboxing Federation. Marcus took the first round, cutting angles like a seasoned vet, slipping punches and continually moving forward. marcus

The second round had the audience erupting with cheers over the beautiful beautiful exchanges, both men pushing forward aggressively and trying to impose their game plan. In the third round Marcus was picking precise shots to catch his opponent rushing in, but his adversary was incredibly tough and kept moving forward. Marcus’s opponent kept pushing forth, throwing punches the whole time. Marcus kept himself safe and picked shots from the outside, but unfortunately the judges gave his opponent the decision. It was an incredibly close bout, Marcus came out unscathed and excited to get back in the gym.

There was a plethora of exciting matches, all varying between boxing, kickboxing and MMA. The first MMA bout on the card was Precision fighter Brandon Mohammed’s MMA debut. Both men made the 170 pound weight limit and stepped into the cage. It was a short and sweet night for Brandon. After getting the better of a couple standup exchanges, Brandon took his opponent down and immediately moved to mount. Brandon switched to side control and his opponent turned his back, only to be met by a vicious storm of knees. As his opponent turned back to face Brandon, he slid back into mount to deliver some ground and pound before stopping his opponent by keylock for a first round submission victory.46525921_216225442607456_4594403688503574528_n

The excitement continued on Sunday when we headed over to Sparta, New Jersey for a friendly smoker with Miller Brothers MMA. Our guys took exhibition matches against their students in kickboxing and Combat Jiu Jitsu. All the matchups ended up being back and forth battles. Everyone kept calm in the face of adversity and left it all in the cage. Most guys could barely stand afterwards! It was a phenomenal display of tenacity, technique and aggression by both teams.

Anybody who’s been following MMA for the past couple of weeks will likely be discussing the aftermath of the long awaited bout between “The Notorious” Conor McGregor and Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov. This bitter rivalry hit a new boiling point after Khabib, a UFC world champion,  hurled himself over the cage and lunged at McGregor’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coach Dillon Dannis. Dannis, a grappling phenom and Bellator MMA star answered with a quick flurry of punches towards Khabib before the two were separated by security.dillon and brian

A fact that most people are unaware of, is that at one point Dillon, Khabib and Precision head coach Brian McLaughlin all trained together under the same roof at AMA Fight Club in Whippany, NJ. At the time, Khabib was preparing for his UFC debut and Dillon was an up and coming prospect; a teen just getting started at Pro Practices. Coach Brian was instructing at AMA as well as sparring with pros himself. Back then, Dillon was quiet and kept a low profile but would show flashes of the brashness that has become his calling card. Khabib was all business from day one. He would come in with his small army of Russians and each of his training partners would pray that they’d make it out of practice with all of the limbs they came in with.

In the days of AMA Fight Club, Dillon and Khabib were always cordial, but life took them in different directions. Khabib relocated to San Jose, California and Dillon became a prodigy under Marcelo Garcia and eventually caught the eye of Conor McGregor; the biggest star that the sport has ever seen. Although the world sees them as bitter rivals at each other’s throat, the memory remains of them being two hard working martial artists sharing the mat in the quest toward greatness.

precisionThis past Saturday May 20th saw a stacked local card full of Precision fighters of varying natures. We had Enrico Chelen Reyes and Nate Cruz in Muay Thai fights, Christopher Stanley and Kevin McAloon in boxing matches, and Andrew Geisler and Mike Russo in grappling matches. Everyone acquitted themselves well.

Nate Cruz was putting on a kicking clinic through all of round one that had the crowd ooh and ahhing. Unfortunately an old shoulder injury re-manifested itself after he took a fall through the ropes in the second round forcing an early stoppage to the fight.

Chelen found himself in a war with an incredibly game opponent. His use of flash spinning techniques and expert clinch work enabled him to see his hand raised!

After spending the vast majority of his time preparing for a Muay Thai bout Drew found himself in a grappling match. He was attacking well throughout the match but found himself in a deep toe hold after a reset that forced the end of the bout.

Kevin boxed at an incredibly high level putting on a boxing clinic for the ages. His footwork and head movement in particular stood out to the judges and after being rattled in the first he came back hard in the second and third to secure a victory.

Chris put on the performance of the night by far battling against an opponent with a distinct experience advantage in boxing. Stan settled in during the final round and was pouring on the pressure but could not get his man out of there and found himself down on the scorecards.

Overall it was an incredible night of fights for Precision and we are proud of all our talented fighters who stepped into the ring that night.

When most people come to a Mixed Martial Arts gym they come with the assumption that they have to learn a smorgasbord of styles and that they will become a jack of all trades, master of none. Though Precision MMA has the resources and the facility to accommodate to teach their students multiple arts, it does not make us strangers to breeding specialized fighters.

One of the most effective ways to test your Martial Arts ability is to go out and compete against someone who focuses their training in one specific field.  It is a true assessment of your proficiency in the art when faced against someone who takes a fragment of your skill set and tangents off of it.  Though many of our members train in multiple disciplines they also come out victories when faced against such specialists.

The Precision MMA boxing team has showcased their knowledge and skill in the boxing community while carrying the “MMA stigma” multiple times. Whether it is winning the Golden Gloves or finding victory in local shows, our boxing team is always up for a challenge and is continuously seeking out new competition. We recently had back to back victories against West point Cadets and USA boxing open class fighters due to spectacular performances from Paul Maley (who is also a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu) and Brandon Clemente (who is part of the National Guard)brandon-boxing

October has also been a great month for our Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competition team as well. We had several victories against experienced competitors in the New Jersey Submission Only Good Fight Tournament. Being a submission only tournament it attracts the best of the best finishers from multiple gyms. This however did not deter our grapplers from finding success.  After numerous hard fought battles Donny Castillo took home the Bronze in the NoGi Blue Belt Division while Christopher Stanley took the Gold in the NoGi Purple Belt Division. Both Donald and Christopher not only have made great strides in their Jiu-jitsu but also have become seasoned strikers during their time at Precision MMA.12189908_10205286908276966_1810348947194069366_n

Precision MMA really separates itself from other mixed martial arts gyms through its dedicated boxing program.  Many gyms might have a karate or muay thai fighter show some combinations every once in a while, but they do not have someone who truly understands the sweet science.  We are different.  Precision has Derek Ohlhoff, arguably the most seasoned boxing trainer in the entire Hudson Valley at our facility on a regular basis correcting student’s technique and adding his tricks of the trade along the way.

Here coach Derek is working with one of Precision’s up and coming fighters Brandon Clemente.  The old adage is “make them miss, make them pay” and that is precisely what Brandon is working on.  Combining defense and offense in a seamless system is the hallmark of coach Derek’s system.

At this weekend’s USA boxing’s  NY vs. Upstate event, Precisions MMA’s Jay “Jaynormous” Lee won in dominating fashion.

This was Jays Debut fight and he worked really hard with our boxing team to get ready. He put in the hours of training and dieting to prepare his body. Precisions boxing team has several pro fighers on our sparing team, meaning our fighters will be prepared for anything thrown at them. We even bring in fighters from other gyms to give our students comfort in uncomfortable situations. This also simulates the anxiety of facing an unknown opponent.

Jay was up against a much taller south paw fighter. The kind of fighter that is most peoples worst nightmare, coach Derrick gave him the tools he needed to go in with confidence. Jay worked his way to the inside and landed thunderous body shots en route to an impressive victory that turned heads and garnered praise from all spectators.
