Jim Miller has a fight coming up against Donald Cerrone.  This is a dream matchup for the fans.  Both Miller and Cerrone are two of the most exciting fighters the lightweight division and even the UFC has.  This is guaranteed to be a barn burner of epic proportions.  Both fighters bring a real finishing prowess to the table and it could become a classic fight much like Miller’s brawl with Joe Lauzon.  The fight also has serious implications for the UFC title picture.  Their are many fighters who have a shot coming to them and Jim and Donald are two of the top guys.  Both fighters are on win streaks and have been legit contenders for years.  This fight should be a can’t miss event for even a casual fight fan.

Donald Cerrone brings an impressive 23-6 record into the cage.  Only five of those wins have gone to a decision.  His loses are to a murderer’s row of fighters, the majority of which were titleholders in the UFC or WEC.  He is also very hard to put away.  His only two stoppage loses are to Benson Henderson and Anthony Pettis.  Miller also has an impressive record with 24 wins and only four loses.  He has been stopped only once in his career and that was by the always dangerous Nate Diaz.  When it comes to winning, Miller does it with almost monotonous regularity.  Miller is a finisher with 14 wins by way of submission and three by TKO or KO.  He has the striking, wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to give anyone problems.  His submission game has been where has had most of his recent success, with both of his last two wins coming in the first round by submission.  One of those victories came over MMA veteran and BJJ blackbelt Fabricio Camoes.

Jim Miller has been training extensively with Precision MMA coaches Karl Nemeth and Brian Mclaughlin.  Karl has been sparring with Jim to prepare him for Cerrone’s very nuanced attacking style.  Cerrone has an excellent jab and uses it for offense better than perhaps anyone in MMA.  Cerrone has his background in kickboxing that also makes his kicks and knees very dangerous.  Karl is a very good kickboxing and is doing his best to imitate the movement and attacks Cerrone throws at his competitors.  Brian has been working with Jim to improve his already lethal ground game.  Jim is becoming harder to hit on the ground, while simultaneously becoming a submission ace.  Jim is dangerous off his back or on top.  Noted BJJ pioneer and avid MMA fan Eddie Bravo recently said that Miller had one of the most dangerous guards in all of MMA.

Jim and Donald will provide a real test for one another and should have a very entertaining fight.  They are veterans who like to fight and who really go for the finish.  I am looking forward to this fight more than any other in recent memory.

A true hall mark of success as an Mixed Martial Arts coach is when established pro fighters seek you out for training.  Finding high level coaching and training opportunities can be very difficult in a fledgling sport.  Many coaches are experts in one area or have never stepped into the ring for pro MMA bouts.  Coaches who do have pro MMA experience are often times out of touch with where the sport has progressed.  Finding a coach who can work with you through every phase of the game is key to succeeding in MMA.  Brian Mclaughlin is a pro MMA fighter who trains with some of the best fighters on the planet.  Several UFC fighters and up-and-coming MMA fighters drive from other states to learn the techniques and strategies Brian offers.  While Brian’s primary focus is on training his everyday students, he also gets great joy out of seeing his training partners win.  Watch the video below to see Dan score a really nice guillotine finish over Ricardo Funch.

The Miller brothers are two of the toughest and longest tenured fighters on the UFC’s roster.  Jim and Dan each have well over ten fights within the UFC, and over twenty in professional MMA, and have been training with Brian for several years now.  Jim Miller is always fighting near the top of what is arguably the strongest division in the UFC, lightweight.  Dan fights up at middleweight and is a tough fight for anybody in the in his weight class.  They have fought some of the best fighters in the world and even if they come up short they never look out of place or outclassed.

Jim Miller’s most recent wins against Joe Lauzon and Fabricio Camoes have showcased his improved grappling and mental game.  Jim Miller has been training with Brian Mclaughlin to prepare for two very submission oriented fighters.  Joe Lauzon and Jim Miller put on one of the best fights in recent memory that ended in a decision victory for Miller and a Fight Of The Night bonus for both fighters.  Miller was put in real danger late in the fight by a Lauzon heelhook attempt, a move he is well known for.  Brian and Jim had trained the escape for that move on many occasions in the lead up to the fight, and Jim brilliantly avoided losing the fight from a late submission attempt.  In his next fight Jim submitted Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black-Belt Fabricio Camoes in spectacular fashion.  His armbar finish was technical and he showed great patience.  In the post fight interview Jim Miller thanked his coach Brian Mclaughlin for helping him get ready for Camoes.

Precision Mixed Martial Arts: Training with Respect

Precision MMA is a gym that sets itself apart from other MMA gyms.  The culture of a gym is one of the most important aspects of training.  A gym can have amazing facilities and tons of space, but if the mindset is off the training is still going to be lacking.  Precision MMA has always made every effort to make itself a place where anyone can learn.  Whether a student is a physical specimen or and average person, Precision makes sure they are included.  Respect for your instructors and training partners and safety is stressed from the start of your first class onward.

Many pro level MMA fighters are starting to embrace a philosophy of training with more intelligence and less full tilt action.  This realization that getting knocked out in practice or not tapping for any reason is starting to show in the marked improvement in technique in all levels of MMA.  Recently Johnny Hendricks and Robbie Lawler had an amazing title fight in the UFC.  Before the fight they both talked about their training regimens and how they prepare.  They both said they focused on lower intensity particularly in sparring .  Avoiding Damage was their primary concern.  This is a strategy that works on everyone, newcomers to world champs.

Many gyms are all about competition and ego.  The classes become smaller versions of tournaments and the students clash in ways that are not conducive to learning.  Some gyms stress winning to the point that every sparring session becomes a matter of life or death.  This has become the stereotype of MMA gyms and many places do nothing to dispel this notion.  Partners are going for the kill rather than learning and making each other better.   Injuries are frequent and often viewed as a sign of weakness rather than as unfortunate side effect of training to hard.  Theses gyms make the victor feel amazing at the expense of the vanquished, rather than making both gain new and better techniques.   MMA has in some instances become the sport of meat heads.  MMA can be a dangerous sport to train.  It is inherently dangerous to compete in, adding to that danger in practice is not smart.

Poughkeepsie MMA

Precision MMA has always taken the greatest caution in creating their class structure.  Technically sound training and execution of moves is stressed.  Safety is also a prime concern.  Many people want to train as hard as possible, especially newer students, and do not realize the damage they could be doing to themselves.  It is on the instructors to ensure that the students are being smart about how they train.  Dangerous techniques can be practiced in a safe way.  You can be put in an armbar or a chokehold and not break an arm or blackout.  You do not need to hurt yourself or someone else in order to train.  In fact if you do injure anyone it will hurt your ability to learn.  Training partners are one of the most valuable assets you have.  Keeping them in class and sharp is how to learn the fastest.  Respecting your training partners health and safety is connected to not letting your ego make the decisions in the gym.  The martial arts are about learning and becoming a better and more respectful person.

In many ways training martial arts is easier today than ever before.  The popularity of MMA competition has made arts such as Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai more accessible to the public.  The internet has allowed techniques to travel across the world in a matter of seconds.  Schools such as Precision MMA in LaGrange, NY now have experts in striking and grappling under the same roof in large world class facilities.  When I began training in the 90’s BJJ and muay thai were unknown.  There were very few training partners to work with and the gyms were small “hole in the wall” facilities.  Instructional videos were few and far between.  Gyms would not mix their styles so I would have to travel to one gym for boxing, another for jiu-jitsu, another for muay thai and still another for wrestling.

Martial arts today is almost a completely different world in 2014.  However, one thing has remained constant – the essential steps for success.  Half my life has been dedicated to training and in that time I have narrowed the path to greatness down to a three step recipe.

#1 Make martial arts a priority in your life

Seems simple enough, but this is the most neglected step in the success formula.  If you want to become great at something it has to become a lifestyle.  Our priorities are things that hold a strong place in our daily routines.  They are the things that must get done.  Other things must work around our priorities.  This can come up in many ways in our daily life.  For example, if you want to add a “movie night” to your weekly routine make sure it’s not during your class time.  If you have a test to study for wake up earlier or go to bed later, but do not allow it to replace your mat time.  If there is a time draining activity like playing video games or watching reality TV that makes getting to class difficult eliminate it.  Treat your training time like a no-excuse, must attend obligation and success will be difficult to avoid.  Additionally, make sure your lifestyle supports your martial arts training.  This may mean prioritizing rest so that you can properly recover from hard sessions or improving your diet so you have the fuel to make it through long sessions.

#2 Show up

Their is an old saying that 80% of success is simply showing up. If you are absent from class you’ll never pass the test.  People will often tell me how important martial arts is in their life, but actions speak louder than words.  The ones who mean are those with the most marks on their attendance card.  Additionally, the more your are in class the more your instructor can understand your learning style and physical abilities as well as limitations.  A teacher and student that work together on a regular and uninterrupted basis have an understanding that brings out the best in both of them.  Your ability to get to class is directly proportional to how much of a priority you’ve made martial arts in your life, in that way the first two steps are forever linked.

#3 Training the right way

Sometimes the biggest determinant of success is not simply the hours you put in, but what you put into the hours.  When it’s time to train turn your cell phone off, focus your mind and commit yourself wholly to improving.  Drill with a purpose, ask questions when confused, follow your coaches advice, step outside your comfort zone and challenge yourself.  There are some people with 10 years of experience and then others with one year repeated ten times.  The difference is the amount of effort that is put forth in expanding one’s abilities.  If you struggle with your guard begin rolling from your back, if your head movement is lacking make yourself do rounds of pure defense – don’t avoid your pitfalls, but rather face them head on.

This is the formula used by myself and many others to find success inside the four walls at Precision MMA.  The nice part of this recipe is that it doesn’t rely on anything other than hard work and dedication abilities which are naturally within the grasp of all.  Choose to be successful!

Poughkeepsie Grapplers Take Home Victories at NAGA
Precision MMA Grapplers made the trip from their hometown of LaGrange, NY up to Albany for the North American Grappling Associations (NAGA) tournament.
The big star of the day was little Mikey Rooney. With only 18 months experience, Mikey was able to win both his intermediate divisions. Since he put on such a strong performance, the decision was made to bump his up to the Expert level – despite going up against grapplers with more than twice his experience, Mikey took home second place, even scoring a few crowd pleasing submissions along the way!

In the Adult Expert Division Jim Fitzpatrick made it to the finals after hitting jaw dropping armlocks and guillotine chokes. In a razor close match the judges awarded his opponent the victory, but “Fitz” had a strong performance looking for the submission from every angle in the toughest division of the day.

Finding an MMA gym can be a difficult decision. As mixed martial arts rises in popularity more and more traditional martial arts schools are now marketing themselves as legitimate sources for mixed martial arts. Also, schools that only specialize in one area of fighting are taking the approach of “fake it ’til you make it” and posturing as complete MMA gyms when in reality they only have training in one area of MMA.  So how do you separate fact from fiction and differentiate the legit schools from the frauds and fakers?

Ask about the MMA Gym‘s schedule and curriculum

Hudson Valley MMA Gym

Hudson Valley MMA Gym

A true MMA Gym will have an even distribution of all areas of striking and grappling. The first sign that an MMA Gym is not legit is if they have grappling everyday, but only 1 or 2 striking classes (or vice versa).  Another cause for concern is if the MMA Gym only offers one style of grappling and one style of striking.  A well rounded MMA Gym will have grappling classes in Judo, Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or striking classes in Karate, Boxing and Muay Thai.  Don’t forget, the most important aspect of MMA is the concept of MIXING the martial arts.

Ask for verified fight records and video

Unfortunately, many MMA Gym owners will simply lie about their instructor’s or student’s accomplishments.  They will invent titles and fabricate stories to make themselves seem relevant.  Resources such as mixedmartialarts.com have comprehensive databases that document pro and amateur MMA fights.

Has the instructor gotten all his belts from the same person or have they been “belt shopping”. Find out where the instructor received their belts (if there is no black belt instructor that is a major red flag too) and email those people. If the person who gave the belt does not endorse them then you can bet there is a problem.  Also, many legit MMA Gyms have “sold out” and are now selling teaching certificates to people who pay large sums of money, but have very little experience.  Find out if the MMA Gym has a legitimate training history with their affiliations or if they just attended a weekend course.  Testimonials from accomplished trainers, students and fighters help verify an MMA Gym legitimacy as well.
