Untold Stories of Hudson Valley MMA Fighters

Hudson Valley MMA

Big John – Hudson Valley MMA

I’m sorry Sir, but these seats are reserved for The Hell’s Angels…

To be fair they weren’t seats, but pick nick tables. Ordinarily I believe fighters should have preferred seating, but in this instance I was willing to look elsewhere.

I was unfamiliar with the social mores of biker rallies, I was going to have to learn as I went.  We weren’t here for the Harleys, we came for a fight.  This was a unique situation as pugilism goes. A bit different than the Hudson Valley MMA scene.  We were far from the glitz and glamor of Las Vegas or Atlantic City.  We were at the black thorn biker ralley in the far reaches of upstate New York. The Empire state hadn’t sanctioned MMA yet, so the legality of these bouts was far from certain.

The fight promoter was a minister; bouts were contested in a pro wrestling ring outside in the pouring rain. In addition to the rules of the bout, fighters were given specific procedures and instructions to follow in the event of a biker riot.

On paper some would say we were an underdog.  Our fighter was not your typical Hudson Valley MMA prospect – a 46 years old chiropractor father of two.  He divided his time at the gym with little league games and parent teacher nights.  The opponent was a 21 year old war tested Marine.  However, fights are not contested on paper and despite being only a few years shy of AARP benefits “Big John” was 245 pounds of granite and steel.  He was a salt of the Earth type who liked big game hunting and rodeo competitions.  He had lethal submissions, but in reality he could make most men tap with a firm handshake.

After wading through a small river of mud we made our way to the ring where I heard a familiar shrill of support instructing Big John to “break his femur” customary pre-fight advice from my student Cliff.  Our opponent was riding high with confidence off the cheers of support from the soldiers in the crowd, but once he locked eyes with John I could tell part of him wished he was somewhere else.

The fight started off with a big right hand, quick double leg and lightning fast Kimura – in just over 90 seconds we earned a submission.  The ref halted the bout, but much like Chael Sonnen at UFC 117 didn’t realize that a tap ended the bout. Infuriated Big John stares down his opponent and says, “No Bullsh*t, you know you tapped” – his opponent, realizing that a rematch wasn’t going to end much better for him, reluctantly nodded his head and accepted defeat. We had our victory and I logged one more story for the grand kids.

Precision Mixed Martial Arts Raises over $6,000 for the Daniel James Miller Foundation

daniel james miller

Daniel James Miller Foundation is fighting to save the life of Daniel James Miller son of UFC Fighter Dan Miller

“On behalf of the Daniel James Miller foundation, thank you SO MUCH Brian for getting involved and thank you to all of your people at Precision MMA who have contributed!!”

– Mike Constantino owner of AMA Fight Club

UFC Fighter Dan Miller is a friend and long time training partner of Precision MMA coach Brian McLaughlin.  Brian and his students at Precision MMA heard about the tragedy that befell the Miller family and were very motivated to help. Below is the story of little Daniel James Miller:

Daniel James Miller, son of UFC middleweight fighter Dan Miller and his wife Kristin, was born with autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease.

His kidneys are large, approximately 3-4 times as large as they should be, and as the name implies, full of cysts. At birth, Danny’s kidneys functioned at a level that allowed his body to clear itself of toxins and fluid, but he required medications to maintain his blood pressure and electrolyte balance. Unfortunately, when he was 2 ½ months old, he became very ill and as a result of that illness, lost all kidney function. He was hospitalized at Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa., where he was started on hemodialysis initially, and then later, peritoneal dialysis. Daniel was hospitalized for a total of about 2 months, the majority of that time, sedated, with multiple intravenous lines, and under constant 1:1 nursing care. His parents, Dan and Kristin learned to care for him, including the mechanics and the principles of peritoneal dialysis. Also, due to the oversized kidneys, Danny required tube feedings and special feeding considerations.

Finally, in May 2010, Danny was discharged home and thrived under the constant and loving care of his parents. He is a bright, sweet and affectionate little boy, who loves being read to, enjoys being outdoors, and is crazy about his “puppies”. He amazes us every day with his capacity to learn and to love.

Danny’s journey is far from over. Although the dialysis that he receives every day clears the toxins and excess fluid from his body, the many other functions of a normal kidney are not replaced by the dialysis, so Danny’s growth has been slow and certain hormone levels are difficult to regulate. Kidney transplantation, specifically a living donor kidney transplant, has been planned, but before that can take place, Danny must have both of his kidneys removed to make room for the transplanted kidney. Once transplantation occurs, Danny will continue frequent follow up visits to the hospital to be monitored and he will require anti- rejection medications for the rest of his life.

Please donate to aid Daniel in his fight for life.

Although Precision MMA’s donations have helped, there is still more that need to be done.  To find out more or donate please visit http://danieljamesmillerfoundation.wordpress.com/

Finding an MMA gym can be a difficult decision. As mixed martial arts rises in popularity more and more traditional martial arts schools are now marketing themselves as legitimate sources for mixed martial arts. Also, schools that only specialize in one area of fighting are taking the approach of “fake it ’til you make it” and posturing as complete MMA gyms when in reality they only have training in one area of MMA.  So how do you separate fact from fiction and differentiate the legit schools from the frauds and fakers?

Ask about the MMA Gym‘s schedule and curriculum

Hudson Valley MMA Gym

Hudson Valley MMA Gym

A true MMA Gym will have an even distribution of all areas of striking and grappling. The first sign that an MMA Gym is not legit is if they have grappling everyday, but only 1 or 2 striking classes (or vice versa).  Another cause for concern is if the MMA Gym only offers one style of grappling and one style of striking.  A well rounded MMA Gym will have grappling classes in Judo, Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or striking classes in Karate, Boxing and Muay Thai.  Don’t forget, the most important aspect of MMA is the concept of MIXING the martial arts.

Ask for verified fight records and video

Unfortunately, many MMA Gym owners will simply lie about their instructor’s or student’s accomplishments.  They will invent titles and fabricate stories to make themselves seem relevant.  Resources such as mixedmartialarts.com have comprehensive databases that document pro and amateur MMA fights.

Check Affiliations and Lineage

Has the instructor gotten all his belts from the same person or have they been “belt shopping”. Find out where the instructor received their belts (if there is no black belt instructor that is a major red flag too) and email those people. If the person who gave the belt does not endorse them then you can bet there is a problem.  Also, many legit MMA Gyms have “sold out” and are now selling teaching certificates to people who pay large sums of money, but have very little experience.  Find out if the MMA Gym has a legitimate training history with their affiliations or if they just attended a weekend course.  Testimonials from accomplished trainers, students and fighters help verify an MMA Gym legitimacy as well.
