Precision MMA really separates itself from other mixed martial arts gyms through its dedicated boxing program.  Many gyms might have a karate or muay thai fighter show some combinations every once in a while, but they do not have someone who truly understands the sweet science.  We are different.  Precision has Derek Ohlhoff, arguably the most seasoned boxing trainer in the entire Hudson Valley at our facility on a regular basis correcting student’s technique and adding his tricks of the trade along the way.

Here coach Derek is working with one of Precision’s up and coming fighters Brandon Clemente.  The old adage is “make them miss, make them pay” and that is precisely what Brandon is working on.  Combining defense and offense in a seamless system is the hallmark of coach Derek’s system.

At this weekend’s USA boxing’s  NY vs. Upstate event, Precisions MMA’s Jay “Jaynormous” Lee won in dominating fashion.

This was Jays Debut fight and he worked really hard with our boxing team to get ready. He put in the hours of training and dieting to prepare his body. Precisions boxing team has several pro fighers on our sparing team, meaning our fighters will be prepared for anything thrown at them. We even bring in fighters from other gyms to give our students comfort in uncomfortable situations. This also simulates the anxiety of facing an unknown opponent.

Jay was up against a much taller south paw fighter. The kind of fighter that is most peoples worst nightmare, coach Derrick gave him the tools he needed to go in with confidence. Jay worked his way to the inside and landed thunderous body shots en route to an impressive victory that turned heads and garnered praise from all spectators.

Poughkeepsie Boxing Classes-Hudson Valley Boxing

Boxing is a great sport for a variety of reasons.  A participant in boxing can derive many benefits from training.  While many people may want to fight in a ring or try their hand at amateur or professional boxing, most people just want to train for the sake of training.  Two of the main benefits of taking boxing classes are an increased ability to defend yourself and getting yourself into terrific shape. Boxing classes can offer many other benefits, but these two are the most prevalent and easy to achieve.

Boxing classes is an underrated martial art for self-defense.  Many people think of boxing as just a contest of who can throw either the harder punches or more punches.  Offense is only half of what you learn in a boxing class and the other half is far more nuanced and in depth.  Any first lesson in a boxing class should include footwork.  A boxers ability to move is a huge predictor of success in a fight.  A boxer who can move in and out is one that will be able to not only land more punches, but also not get hit.  Controlling the distance at which a fight is fought is how you stop yourself from being hit in a street fight.  Before any new student can spare, they have to learn how to not get hit.  Head movement and other evasive tactics can be used in both organized fights and street fights.  A boxer who uses head movement in the ring is a sight to behold, constantly confusing his opponents and leaving them out of position.  A person who can use boxing head movement to avoid getting hit in a self-defense scenario is in very little danger from the average guy on the street picking a fight.  Combine head movement and footwork and a person becomes a nearly untouchable.

Boxing classes can have you in the best shape of your life.  A typical boxing class has many different workouts on any given day.  The start is typically a footwork drill or jumping rope.  It moves on to mitt work and and pad holding.  The major part of class is learning techniques and then repeating them while the instructor monitors and makes sure form is perfect.  The average boxing class consists of a whole body workout.  Punches, when they are properly learned, are a full body workout that utilizes leg, arm and core muscles.  Throwing punches in combination enhances this work out.  At the end of a boxing class your feet or lower legs are sore from the footwork and jump ropes.  Your arms are sore from punching and parrying punches.  The whole experience is one of the most fun and rewarding workouts I have ever experienced.

Olympic_BoxingNot all boxing programs are created equal.  Some are only for the hardened veterans, those who have competed before and just need a little tweaking here and there by expert coaches in order to further their potential.  These gyms tend to overlook the beginners and those who are looking to box casually.  Precision MMA in Dutchess County has a boxing program which never overlooks the casuals or the novice students.  We have teachers who are patient and will work to help anyone who is willing to put in the time.

Our head boxing coach Derrick Ohlhoff, who is a 3 times Golden Gloves’ boxing champion, has been teaching at Dutchess Counties’ Precision MMA for almost five years now.  Because he has seen it at all and trained with pro boxers like Zuri Lawerence and Brian Barbosa, but also remembers well his days as a beginner and has seen what it takes to get new boxers to a high level, he is quite adept at teaching the new prospects who walk through our doors.  Derrick is extremely patient and has a good sense of humor which attracts younger boxers who might at first be a bit intimidated and expecting that boxing will be a grueling affair with strict coaches.  Derrick is all about the fundamentals, and these are what beginners need more than anything else.  He lets the novice students know when they are experiencing progress every step of the way, since new boxers may often not realize that their technique is improving with rapid speed, and being told so increases their confidence and makes them want to attend more classes.

Dutchess County’s boxing program at Precision MMA also has a great coach in Jon Russo.  Russo is also excellent at teaching beginners because not only does he also have ring experience but he has a great sense of humor and is truly one of the “young at heart”.  Russo has also trained in Martial Arts such as Jeet Kune Do and Taekwondo and has a keen eye for practical self-defense, so this combined with his sense of playfulness has allowed him to create many fun and creative training exercises for the beginners.  The younger students in particular rave about Jon’s training methodologies and are always wondering what new training technique he might introduce next.  He has all the fundamentals of boxing down, yet is not one to think rigidly and can adjust his teaching methods to his students’ personalities.

Finally, Jon Joy is perhaps our most beginner-friendly coach.  This is probably because despite the fact that Joy has improved tremendously in record time and now has several amateur boxing wins under his belt, it was not long ago that he was also a beginner learning the sweet science in Dutchess County at Precision MMA.  Remembering what was imparted to him early on, Joy focuses intently on those fundamentals so essential to early progress in the sport of boxing, such as footwork and head movement.

Because Precision MMA in Dutchess County has three patient, good-natured instructors with varying teaching styles we are an excellent gym for beginning boxers.  Don’t be shy, come box with us for 30 free days and you’ll be hooked in no time.
