In a special ceremony at Precision’s sister school Pure Mixed Martial Arts in Denville, NJ Precision Boxing and MMA coach Karl Nemeth was awarded his first degree black belt under Jamie Cruz.  Jamie is a staple of the northeast jiu-jitsu scene and a long time coach of Precision head instructor Brian McLaughlin.

Coach Karl is a true martial artist. He was able to earn his first degree in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, a ground fighting art, despite the fact that his main focus is muay thai kickboxing. Coach Karl joins David Karchmer and head coach Brian McLaughlin as Precision coaches who have achieved their first degrees. At this same ceremony coach Brian also promoted his student and long time Precision member Jim Fitzpatrick to the rank of black belt.  One week later Fitz demonstrated his black belt skills at PA Cage fighting where he won a title fight by armbar in less than 1 minute. precisionThis past Saturday May 20th saw a stacked local card full of Precision fighters of varying natures. We had Enrico Chelen Reyes and Nate Cruz in Muay Thai fights, Christopher Stanley and Kevin McAloon in boxing matches, and Andrew Geisler and Mike Russo in grappling matches. Everyone acquitted themselves well.

Nate Cruz was putting on a kicking clinic through all of round one that had the crowd ooh and ahhing. Unfortunately an old shoulder injury re-manifested itself after he took a fall through the ropes in the second round forcing an early stoppage to the fight.

Chelen found himself in a war with an incredibly game opponent. His use of flash spinning techniques and expert clinch work enabled him to see his hand raised!

After spending the vast majority of his time preparing for a Muay Thai bout Drew found himself in a grappling match. He was attacking well throughout the match but found himself in a deep toe hold after a reset that forced the end of the bout.

Kevin boxed at an incredibly high level putting on a boxing clinic for the ages. His footwork and head movement in particular stood out to the judges and after being rattled in the first he came back hard in the second and third to secure a victory.

Chris put on the performance of the night by far battling against an opponent with a distinct experience advantage in boxing. Stan settled in during the final round and was pouring on the pressure but could not get his man out of there and found himself down on the scorecards.

Overall it was an incredible night of fights for Precision and we are proud of all our talented fighters who stepped into the ring that night.

Congratulations to Precision MMA grapplers Andrew Geisler and Mike Russo who took first place at this past weekend’s North American Grappling Association tournament.  Mike showed the composure of a veteran despite this being his very first time competing. He used skillful guillotine chokes and top positioning to cruise to victory.

Andrew stole the show by winning each of his matches by submission in under 1 minute. Andrew was eager to prove himself after dropping a controversial decision in his last boxing match and he succeeded in turning heads in his gold medal performance!

When most people come to a Mixed Martial Arts gym they come with the assumption that they have to learn a smorgasbord of styles and that they will become a jack of all trades, master of none. Though Precision MMA has the resources and the facility to accommodate to teach their students multiple arts, it does not make us strangers to breeding specialized fighters.

One of the most effective ways to test your Martial Arts ability is to go out and compete against someone who focuses their training in one specific field.  It is a true assessment of your proficiency in the art when faced against someone who takes a fragment of your skill set and tangents off of it.  Though many of our members train in multiple disciplines they also come out victories when faced against such specialists.

The Precision MMA boxing team has showcased their knowledge and skill in the boxing community while carrying the “MMA stigma” multiple times. Whether it is winning the Golden Gloves or finding victory in local shows, our boxing team is always up for a challenge and is continuously seeking out new competition. We recently had back to back victories against West point Cadets and USA boxing open class fighters due to spectacular performances from Paul Maley (who is also a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu) and Brandon Clemente (who is part of the National Guard)brandon-boxing

October has also been a great month for our Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competition team as well. We had several victories against experienced competitors in the New Jersey Submission Only Good Fight Tournament. Being a submission only tournament it attracts the best of the best finishers from multiple gyms. This however did not deter our grapplers from finding success.  After numerous hard fought battles Donny Castillo took home the Bronze in the NoGi Blue Belt Division while Christopher Stanley took the Gold in the NoGi Purple Belt Division. Both Donald and Christopher not only have made great strides in their Jiu-jitsu but also have become seasoned strikers during their time at Precision MMA.12189908_10205286908276966_1810348947194069366_n

In most schools students are forced to make a difficult choice.  Do they want to learn techniques that will keep them safe against a street fight or the cutting edge modern sport jiu-jitsu moves.  The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world is embroiled in a heated debate with each side insisting they are more worthy.  At Precision MMA we have embraced all sides of jiu-jitsu.

This footage is from a typical Monday night.  We begin with our “Vale Tudo” class which focuses on the Gracie Jiu-jitsu self defense method.  This night Dan and Larry were drilling the headlock escape series.  Headlocks are one of the most common attacks you will encounter in a self defense scenario and we have many methods for escape.

Following this class blue belts and above can put their kimonos on and learn the latest in sport jiu-jitsu.  Here Erik drills De La Riva sweeps and back takes.  These are sophisticated attacks designed to work against experienced BJJ opponents.

Old school meets new school on the mats of Precision MMA!

When people ask me who my favorite grappler is they are often surprised that I put a 13 year old girl at the top of the heap, but for my money Grace Gundrum is as good as it gets.  Grace is a student at 10th planet Bethlehem and she has made a name for herself on the local grappling circuit easily disposing of girls and boys of all shapes and sizes in dramatic fashion.  Aside from her incredible rubber guard and inventive submissions, the thing I love about Grace is her quiet respectful demeanor and her calm, almost timid disposition – the antithesis of the chest pounding bravado that dominates much of the sport. Over the past two years I’ve shared the mat with Grace’s coaches JM Holland and Zac Maslany, two brown belts with unrivaled passion for jiu-jitsu.  Zac and Holland have brought Grace to the forefront of the submission grappling world with repeat appearances at the Eddie Bravo Invitational (EBI) – the world’s most prestigious submission only tournament. At both events Grace stole the show by besting some of the country’s top young grapplers. Following her victory at the last EBI her coach told me that my techniques had a hand in her victory posting this image on social media

@brianwmclaughlin taught me this choke series we showed @gracegundrum the rest is history Grace

This was one of my proudest moments as a jiu-jitsu coach.  The future of jiu-jitsu is in good hands and I’m happy to have a small fingerprint of this generation’s brightest star.

Congratulations to Precision MMA’s newest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu purple belt Johnny Miranda!  Johnny has been one of Precision’s hardest working members for the past three years and he has now joined the exclusive club of Brian McLaughlin purple belts. In addition to training BJJ, muay thai and MMA Johnny is also a rock star – he’s the lead singer and front man for the group Via Vanity.
